New York Restaurants

There are, literally, thousands of incredible restaurants in Manhattan, with new ones popping up every day. Cuisine from every part of the world can be found here, with a plethora of options in every style. Fancy a curry? There are a dozen Indian joints within one block of East 6th Street. The East 30s are a de facto Koreatown. And Chinatown and Little Italy are just the tip of the iceberg for those types of food.

When you're downtown and hungry, remember these two words and you can't go wrong: Blue Ribbon. Whether you end up at the Blue Ribbon, the Blue Ribbon Bakery, or Blue Ribbon Sushi, chefs Bruce and Eric Bromberg will take care of you. Blue Ribbon is an experimental, southern-style bistro, the Bakery specialises in small nouvelle plates, and the Sushi is, well, raw fish.

Bagels, lox, cream cheese, pastrami on rye. These are the staples of the Jewish deli. But which deli is the best? The most popular is certainly The Carnegie Deli, featuring enormous sandwiches with names like The Egg and Oy, Nova on Sunday, Fifty Ways to Love Your Liver, and, of course, The Woody Allen. Running a close second is the Second Avenue Deli, which many feel is more authentic and has better matzoh ball soup. For takeaway, it's Barney Greengrass. And if you really want to load up on the goods, Zabar's is a gourmet deli superstore with two floors of delicious delicacies.
New York Nightlife

Catering to every nocturnal interest imaginable, nightlife in Manhattan is maddening, changing as quickly as an indecisive person changes his or her mind. The following is just a handful of the city's best offerings, from the terminally trendy to the interminably popular, and a few in between.

Centro Fly (45 West 21st Street, 001-212-627-7770). Let it be known that this club-cum-lounge is trendoid central, attracting fly guys and gals from all walks of life who come to see and be seen. Several open lounges and ample room for dancing (not to mention the roped-off, blue champagne deck for those willing to cough up a few hundred bucks for a $20 bottle of Absolut) are among the reasons why there's an enormous buzz about this place. Oh, and the DJ line-up isn't too shabby either, attracting spinmasters such as LTJ Bukem, Armand Van Helden and Roger Sanchez.

CBGB's (313 Bowery, 001-212-982-4052). It's hard to resist the place where New York punk began. The archetypal punk club, CBGB's is an institution. Blondie, the Ramones and the Talking Heads, among others, all got their starts here. It's filthy, it's dirty and it's deliciously all about the music.

Roxy (515 West 18th Street, 001-212-645-5156). A New York institution, this former roller disco is best known for its gay night on Saturdays, which attracts everyone from drag queens and go-go boys to wide-eyed tourists who come to marvel at the sights and sounds. These vary from 80s and New Wave to hardcore house music, and occasional live performances by divas like Cher and, of course, the constant buzz of an alleged Madonna appearance. For a less homogenous crowd, consider going on a Friday night (that's straight night). Oh, and get there before 1 am, because if you don't, the only part of the club you're going to see is the outside.

Bungalow 8 (515 W 27th St, Chelsea, 001-212-629-3333). The of-the-moment favoured hang-out of the rich and famous. Snobbish door policy? Check. Prohibitively expensive drinks? Check. If you're not totally fabulous, don't even try. But if you fancy your chances, this is probably the closest New York has today to Studio 54.

The standard way in which restaurants operate is that customers sit at tables, a waiter comes to take their order, and later brings the food, and the customers pay the bill afterwards. Depending on local custom, a tip of varying proportions of the bill (often 10-20%) is added, which (usually) goes to the staff rather than the restaurant. Restaurants often specialise in certain types of food. For example, there are seafood restaurants, vegetarian restaurants or ethnic restaurants.
